I remember telling my parents that I wanted to go to artschool they responded with ‘I certainly didn’t raise my daughter to be a starving artist, what did we do wrong, and my gawd - how will you live?’ So what did I do - I listened to them (as I’d always done) and went down the road of employee, marriage & motherhood before I grew up enough to take myself seriously and go to artschool at the age of 29.
Artschool was certainly a challenge in terms of my regular life – but that is also the realization of pushing myself outside of a comfort zone in order to really see who I am and where I feel at home with myself.
So I hear you say ya ya school is one thing but what about ‘reality’....
How does this sound an undergrad’s options:
Furniture Designer, Program Co-ordinator, Interior Design, Computer Game Designer, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Photo Journalist, Fashion or Industrial Design ...
With a masters degree or even a PhD in the Arts the list expands – Teacher, Lecturer, Professor, Curator, Museum Director, Interior, Urban or Marine Architect, and the list never ends just like the individual wearing that cap & gown.
Ah ha but what about being a real artist - painter or a sculptor – how do they make a living ...... or is it true and they are starving ..... Tune in next week when I’ll let you more .... |

Next Thursday evening Two Rivers Gallery will be bursting with creative energy.
In the Rustad Galleria a new exhibition of paintings by Vanderhoof based artist Elizabeth Miller called Landscapes of a Lifetime. The opening reception also embraces the concept of landscape in another manner through the voices of the Cantata singers. The performance begins at 7.
At 7.40 or so, painter Judith DesBrisay will talk about her work entitled geographies. Judith is one of this region’s finest abstract landscape painters and she will be talking about what inspires her to paint as she does - like her connection to her home and her travels and work in the Arctic, Ant-Arctic and South America
.
At 8.30 join Elizabeth Miller as she talks about her landscape painting and how her travels over time have influenced her work.
It will be a most interesting evening as we have two painters, both travellers and both inspired to paint by the landscape with each completely different outcomes. Elizabeth paints in a realistic manner whereas Judith’s paintings are abstracted and symbolic in nature.

Today I want to talk about an aspect of that Gallery that not many people know about and that is our outreach programs. Like the Art Heals program at the hospital.
The gallery visits the children’s ward as well as the adolescent psychiatric assessment unit twice a week for 1 ½ hour art sessions in each.
Working with children in the paediatric unit has instant gratification. The third floor with teens awaiting psychiatric assessment is a completely different scenario.
Imagine this - a table full of teens, out of their element living the unknown but still in that mode of okay so try to impress me.
A month or so ago I interviewed a 16 yr old girl who’d been in the unit for almost 2 months working through her assessment & diagnosis. The part about artheals she loved the most was that the teacher was facilitating art and not doing art therapy - she looked forward to the sessions and felt that it really helped her self-confidence which helped with her healing process.
She now attends art classes, is an active volunteer and is entertaining a future in the arts. This girl’s success is also our measured success – one that we have been able to witness because she is so actively involved in the Gallery. The other success stories are not so easily tracked because of confidentiality and locations – as far away as Prince Rupert.
Success can only be really measured during the Artheals session and that success is measured by attitude shifts, engagement with the art making process that might include a genuine smile or two.
Art works in many ways.

Last week I talked about a fundraising event on for July 20th called the Artists in the Garden Tour. In that session I suggested that creativity comes in many forms – it is everywhere and it is everyday – like the gardener whose canvas is the earth with plants as paint.
Today I’m going to talk about creativity in a form that we can all agree on. And that is the creativity of children. The creative instincts of children are celebrated, encouraged and are naturally simple. Why .... because children create in order to make sense of the surroundings, to figure stuff out in order to learn. We’ve all witnessed it with grandchildren, children and yes even yourself although it might seem a long time ago - children are so free, so alive and wonderfully at ease with their creative nature.
So get out there and be creative beside children .... they are the ones that really know how to do it !

Following on with my talks on where artists get their inspiration from today I’m going to talk about where you could observe the process and take some away for yourself.
On Sunday, July 20th the Artists in the Garden tour will take place. This is the 6th year that Two Rivers Gallery has organized this fundraising event.
5 gardens with approximately 5 artists in each garden showcasing their work as well as making some on the day. There is a wide range of media to explore like stone, wood, canvas as well as ceramics, glass to beading. This is a great opportunity to meet the artists - talk to them about their work or simply observe the artist being inspired by the wonderful gardens they are placed in.
The gardens stand up as works of art in themselves. It always amazes me that whatever medium an artist or creative person – like a gardener – uses the results are always as individual as the person that made it.
Think about it your garden probably has trees, plants and grass and so does your neighbour’s garden yet it is completely different. Just like a painter, sculptor of potter – same materials and always individual results.
So bring a friend and join in on this self guided tour on Sunday July 20th - visit some amazing gardens. Be inspired by art in nature and the nature of art – remember art is everywhere and it is everyday ! |
