Debutante: Davida Kidd, Paula Scott, Lisa Hebden and Liz Carter

Reception – December 6 7:30 pm. All are welcome.

Recently moves were made in Spain, France, Great Britain and elsewhere to replace traditionally thin fashion models with those who were considered to have a healthy Body Mass Index. Many believe that images of ultra-thin models in popular media have had an impact upon body image and self esteem particularly in adolescent girls and young women, leading to serious health issues.

This exhibition focuses on representations of precisely this demographic. At times humorous, at other times disturbing this exhibition explores the experience of growing up female, while surveying representations of young women in the work of contemporary BC artists.

December 7 — February 17, 2008

Please join us at Two Rivers Gallery for Lisa Hebden's and Liz Carter's artists' talks on Thursday 24 January at 7:30 pm.

Liz Carter's and Lisa Hebden's work forms part of Two Rivers Gallery's Debutante exhibition at Two Rivers Gallery through 17 February.

Street Spirits Theatre Company will provide a short performance.

Lisa Hebden
Lisa Hebden is a figurative oil painter living in Victoria, BC. She works from drawings, photographs, memory and ephemera to make paintings that have a sense of otherworldliness to them. She is facinated by narrative, which carries over into the paintings: something is always happening beyond their surfaces. Lisa Hebden is a 2003 recipient of a Painting on the Edge Award from the Federation of Canadian Artists. Lisa holds two degrees, in Fine Arts & Graphic Design, from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. Her work has been featured in International Artist Magazine, Applied Arts Magazine, Art Avenue, Ceramics Art & Perception, The Vancouver Sun, The Halifax Herald and the Claremont Review.

Liz Carter
Intrigued by the process of art making Liz Carter enjoys the exploration of different mediums. Her creative energy is spent full-time on painting and black & white photography. Liz strives to practice new ways of exploring, improvising and expressing her work in order to communicate her message clearly.
As most First Nations people feel when they are raised outside of their culture, Liz felt disconnected with her cultural heritage but re-introduction took place after the birth of her children and since then her work has turned to an integration of identity with many facets. Davida Kidd's artist's talk, previously scheduled on Thursday 17 January, has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond the artist's control.

Davida Kidd's Statement:
"The content of my art practice, for years, has addressed themes of domination: the psyche by the dream or ideal, the conscience by guilt, the personality by passion. Individuals often appear to be trapped or misguided by their own choices.

Working in the general realm of manipulated photography, I like to blend the line between illusion and reality, cultivating the ambiguous line at which my subjects become invented creatures. We are, after all, human projectors. How we perceive what we see in front of us can change before our eyes.

As much as the intrinsic documentary quality and "truth" factor of the photograph has been challenged, it still lends a kind of rational surface, which I enjoy manipulating in order to pull the viewer into my ambiguous narratives."

Davida Kidd was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix (for traditional and non-traditional printmaking) at the International Print Triennial in Krakow, Poland on September 19th, 2003. (from http://www.elliottlouis.com/artists/Davida_Kidd.asp).
