make Art make Sense

Going to an art gallery can, at times, be a very confusing, or even alienating, experience.  This is because contemporary art is very new compared to the art we know, and love, like the paintings done by Van Gogh.  Nevertheless why should the viewer feel like they need an art degree in order to try to make head nor tails of the artwork.

At the Gallery we are addressing this problem in two ways.

One is a quick information guide that also asks questions where you make up your own answers – there are no right or wrong answers – it is simply a way of helping you look and asking you to think a little bit about what you’re looking at.

And two - After viewing the work you can go into the make Art make sense studio and do an art activity.  For instance in the last show by Chris Read’s The Good The Bad and The Bunny there were drawings, ukranian eggs and a wonderful installation of sock cats and bunnies - yes the kind your gramma used to make.  The activity was to make a sock cat, bunny or creature.

This space is very popular with the entire family.  My sister and I made bunnies & talked & laughed for 3 hours.  The activity is free and changes with every new show.

One last point - remember learning how to ride a bike – there was the explanation but more importantly you had to give it a go in order to really make sense of it.  And once you learn how to ride a bike – you remember it!
