To ensure the protection and conservation of artwork, the gallery's environment is strictly regulated. Temperature and humidity are kept at optimum levels while air quality is maintained through the use of a system of air filters.
In its overall design, the gallery incorporates two key concepts - cocooning and day lighting. To further protect the exhibition galleries from the extremes of the external environment, they are located in the centre of the building, cocooned or wrapped by the rest of the facility.
Skylights allow the second floor to function similarly to light-mixing attics found in 19th Century Picture galleries.
?Moveable blackout tables located there allow natural light to enter the exhibition galleries while special glass, blocks damaging ultra-violet radiation.
