How DO artists make a living?

I remember telling my parents that I wanted to go to artschool they responded with  ‘I certainly didn’t raise my daughter to be a starving artist, what did we do wrong, and my gawd - how will you live?’  So what did I do - I listened to them (as I’d always done)  and went down the road of employee, marriage & motherhood before I grew up enough to take myself seriously and go to artschool at the age of 29.

Artschool was certainly a challenge in terms of my regular life – but that is also the realization of pushing  myself outside of a comfort zone in order to really see who I am and where I feel at home with myself.

So I hear you say ya ya school is one thing but what about ‘reality’....

How does this sound an undergrad’s options:

Furniture Designer, Program Co-ordinator, Interior Design, Computer Game Designer, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Photo Journalist, Fashion or Industrial Design ...

With a masters degree or even a PhD in the Arts the list expands – Teacher, Lecturer, Professor, Curator, Museum Director, Interior, Urban or Marine Architect, and the list never ends just like the individual wearing that cap & gown.

Ah ha but what about being a real artist - painter or a sculptor – how do they make a living ...... or is it true and they are starving .....  Tune in next week when I’ll let you more ....
