Ted Hiebert Incidental Self Portrait #2, 2005-2007, Digital print

Using photographic techniques in low-level lighting conditions, Ted Hiebert creates provocative images based on the human form. In this near dark environment Hiebert draws focus to his subject’s presence by using glow in the dark body paint and long exposures. Incorporating elements of different creatures into his photographs or by using complex composition of multiple human forms, Hieberts’s subjects evolve into a tangle of shapes and body parts that resemble some kind of odd hybrid.

Having Obliterated many of the features that we rely upon to identify the self, Hiebert calls into question the identity of his subject matter in order to provoke a series of broader questions. Can we believe what we see? How do representations of ourselves reflect our sense of identity or the image we have of ourselves? Does this reveal some aspect of our human nature? Whether directed inwardly or in terms of a greater social context these questions cut to the core of who we are.

Ted Hiebert will be giving an Artist's talk on 15 January at 7:30pm at Two Rivers Gallery.
