Ryszard Litwiniuk, Metamorphosis (seven from one), 2004. Wood and steel.

Litwiniuk, from Mississauga, Ontario, exercises an interest in spatial play, naturally occurring patterns and perspective.

He bores through scavenged "rounds" or stumps of wood, extracting progressively smaller component parts that are extruded and pinned in place using steel rods. These sculptures resemble tree stumps that appear to explode out of themselves into space, while their forms, however abstract, evoke impressions of giant multi-segmented insects.

Ryszard Litwiniuk, Metamorphosis 12 from 2, 2000. Wood and steel.

Addressing the formal challenge of transforming an initial geometric "blank" into an organic form, the work becomes a metaphor for our relationship with nature and resonates with Northern British Columbia as an apt and timely metaphor for evolving relationships between human beings and the environment, precipitated by the pine beetle epidemic decimating BC's lodgepole pines.
