July 2 to July 19, 1992
One hundred and fifty-two young people, ages three to eighteen years, from 39 BC communities, had their artwork either selected for exhibition or cited for honourable mention in the seventh biennial British Columbia Young Artists 1991 Exhibition (BCYA ’91.) Don Shumka, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Emily Carr College of Art and Design, made the announcement.
“Throughout the province, teachers and parents submitted more than 1,600 pieces of young people’s art for consideration by the seven-member selection team. From these entries, 79 works were selected for the touring exhibition and an additional 73 works were cited for honourable mention,” confirmed Mr. Shumka. “This exhibition is an important project for districts, independent and preschool programs along with extra-curricular programs at art centres, community centres, and galleries. BCYA exhibitions continue to be the only province-wide opportunity to showcase and to celebrate the feelings and viewpoints so candidly expressed by our youth.”
BCYA ’91 will open at Emily Carr College of Art and Design on September 15, 1991 and continue there until October 6, 1991, before beginning a two-year provincial tour.
The seven-member selection committee, chaired by retired art education, Wyn Davies, included representation from the elementary, secondary, university and alternate education sectors.
“It was a privilege to see so many submissions so full of vitality and spontaneity,” commented Mr. Davies. “The selection teams had to give careful consideration to all the entries, from the eager explorations by the youngest to the careful renderings of the teens, in order to select the work that demonstrates an imaginative approach to the subject and skill in the use of the medium. It was a challenging task.” He continued, “As a result, this BCYA Exhibition vividly displays energy, enthusiasm and a wealth of ideas to us all.”
