March 7 to May 11, 2003
Having emerged from an apprenticeship in a Renaissance-style studio, Nicole Bauberger repainted the works of Artemesia Gentileschi. Going beyond the technical exercise of reproduction, Bauberger explores the experience of being a woman artist in the past and present. This exploration takes the form of a journal, recording an imagined conversation with Gentileschi, now long deceased. These paintings and journal excerpts are exhibited along with an installation of drawings. Derived from photographs of Bauberger’s body these drawings explore themes introduced by the journal from a personal and contemporary perspective.
