There is an exhibition on in the Rustad Galleria, called from the lathe 09, which is a must see. Especially if you are interested in wood. There are 6 artists from the Prince George Wood Tuners Guild and one special guest turner from Edmonton.
This exhibition goes beyond what one normally considers wood turning to be, it goes beyond the salad bowl and steps out of the bounds of sculptural possibilities with that medium - some of the work looks like it has been made out of a more manipulative medium like clay - but it's not its wood. It's mind boggling, how in the world is it possible.
The artists, Ron Malyk, Ron Clements, Laurieee Duberone, Lin Bayford, Art Bectby, Max Meuller and their guest turner Brian McEvoy are showcasing a variety of wood with its inherent beauty and the realms of possibility - It's wonderful to see such skill, technique, knowledge and creativity all come together with infinite possibilities.
There is one piece by McEvoy that totally defies its medium . It is a large piece of maple that has been turned and then methodically carved with such finesse that the wooden bowl shape now looks like lace.
Did you know that wood turning is one of the oldest methods man used to carry water and store food? Also that the wood needs to be initially turned in a green state, left to age, or dry out, for a year and is then finished - so this medium takes vision, pllanning, patients and practised skill.
