Last week I talked about individual creativity within the Holiday Homes Tour, which is on Nov 22 and the $20 earlybird ticket price until tomorrow then the price goes up to $30 BUT Anyway today I want to talk about one of my favourite calendar events for creativity and that is Hallowe'en. Ever since I can remember I've always loved dressing up for Hallowe'en. I suppose when I was a child the sweeties had alot to do with it but now it's all about the costume. And not so much the actual wearing of it but it's the planning and the making of it. I love the flash of an idea and then the challenge of bringing it to life. This kind of making is called process..... An artist's statement might say Cat is interested in the process of the making rather than the end product. Process is the opposite of procedure. Procedure, in this context, might mean going to the store and buying a readymade costume - a direct line or procedure to the end product. The process is the fun and the product is the outcome. So why do we dress up - I read online that Hallowe'en, as we know it, originated with the Irish & Scottish immigrants' and is a derivation of the Celtic festival ‘Samhain' pronounced /ˈsɑːwɪn The festival marked the end of the summer's harvest & the new Celtic Calendar. It was believed to be a time when the boundary between the world and the otherworld dissolved and the dead became dangerous for the living by contaminating crops & livestock causing illness. Everyone dressed up to ward of those evil spirits. Hmmm maybe that's why we love, & possibly need it, to keep warding off those evil spirits.... happy hallowe'eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen
